People are often more nervous about the assessment than about the content. The reality is far less intimidating than most first timers expect, and nobody is trying to catch you out. Here is how a session actually runs.
You will receive a link to a short online component. Work through it in your own time before your practical session. It covers the theory and the multiple choice questions, which means the day itself can be spent on hands on practice rather than sitting through slides. You will also need a Unique Student Identifier, which is free and takes a few minutes to create online.
Your trainer will demonstrate each skill, then you practise it yourself on the manikins while they correct your technique. You will work through the DRSABCD sequence, perform two minutes of continuous CPR, use a training defibrillator, practise back blows and chest thrusts on infant and child manikins, and run through bandaging and the recovery position. Group sizes are kept small enough that everyone gets repeated turns.
Assessment is continuous rather than a single nerve wracking test at the end. The trainer watches you perform each skill and confirms that you meet the standard. If something is not quite right, they will show you again and let you repeat it. Nobody fails for being nervous, and there is no time pressure beyond the two minutes of continuous compressions, which is a requirement of the unit itself.
Certificates are issued the same day once you have completed both the online component and the practical assessment. You can forward it to a family or agency immediately. If you lose it later, we can reissue it, and the details are also recorded against your Unique Student Identifier.
